A poem from the perspective of 5-year old Hope. With a longing to join in but struggling to keep up with her peers. With feelings of loneliness, hope, and the joy of inclusion when someone reaches out. A touching reminder of the power of friendship and kindness.

Just Like Them
I sat reading the kids a book before bed just the other day, and as I read, Alexander lay himself down on his stomach getting comfortable while listening. Hope looked over at him, smiled and twisted and rolled to put herself in the same position. She looks up to her brothers and she wants to be just like them… and that’s where this blog came from.
They run and they jump about while they play,
They skip around and have fun all day.
And as I watch in my mind I say…
“I want to be just like them one day”
They colour and draw, from morning til night,
In all of the colours, pink, green and white.
I want to join in with more blue, red and grey…
“I want to be just like them one day”
They play pirates with swords and travel the seas,
They make great superheros flying through trees.
Right now it’s hard but one day I pray…
“I want to be just like them one day”
They read lots of stories and wild fairytales,
They talk about everything, full of details
The words won’t come out though, try as I may…
“I want to be just like them one day”
Each day I work hard, to build up my ability,
I won’t be defined by my own disability,
I’ll continue to work and when I’m older I’ll say.
“I knew I could be just like them one day.”
